Courthouse News Service: HOUSTON (CN) - A school district will not face claims that it violated the due process of a bullied teenager who committed suicide, a federal judge ruled.
Amy Brown Truong says her son Asher Brown endured constant bullying while attending Hamilton Middle School in the Cypress Fairbanks Independent School District.
Asher had Asperger's syndrome, spoke with a lisp, and walked with a slight "sashay" because he was pigeon-toed, according to the federal complaint.

Kristen Stewart Talks Bullying in Vanity Fair - iVillage
Kristen Stewart Talks Bullying in Vanity Fair - iVillage: Kristen Stewart has transformed from a tomboyish teenager into one of the most popular and sought-after actresses on the planet -- and, thanks to The Twilight Saga, she's done it largely in the public eye. And while the 22-year-old Snow White & the Hunstman star has received more than her fair share of ribbing at the hands of the media (the press likes to criticize her apparent distaste for smiling, among other things), the says that's nothing compared to the bullying she was subjected to when she was younger.

'Fifty Shades of Grey'
'Fifty Shades of Grey' by E.L. James is now the bestselling Ebook on Kindle ever - Chicago Literature | Examiner.com:
"Author E.L. James first wrote her “Fifty Shades” series as fan fiction of the popular “Twilight Saga” by Stephenie Meyer, but her work is truly a sexual and moving work all her own now.
She was initially a self-published author on the Kindle, but after seeing her book take off online (many readers admitted they were embarrassed to have the sexy book in hand, and rather enjoyed the safety and discretion that could be found in the Ebook), the online trend continued."
and people wonder why I think my series will be the next big thing.

Publishing Market Shows Steady Title Growth in 2011 Fueled Largely by Self-Publishing Sector - MarketWatch
Publishing Market Shows Steady Title Growth in 2011 Fueled Largely by Self-Publishing Sector - MarketWatch: NEW PROVIDENCE, N.J., June 5, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Bowker, the global leader in bibliographic information, released its annual report on U. S. print book publishing for 2011, compiled from its Books In Print® database. Based on preliminary figures from U.S. publishers, Bowker is projecting that traditional print book output grew six percent in 2011, from 328,259 titles in 2010 to a projected 347,178 in 2011, driven almost exclusively by a strong self-publishing market. This is the most significant expansion in more than four years for America's traditional publishing sector, but removing self-publishing from the equation would show that the market is relatively flat from 2010.

Ridley Scott optioning an indie novel - Lexington Literature | Examiner.com: Who says indie authors can't be taken seriously? Who says their books don't make the grade? Certainly not Ridley Scott, director of such films as Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, and Thelma and Louise.
Deadline.com posted this weekend that 20th Century Fox and Scott were in negotiations with author Hugh Howey for the film rights to Howey's novel, Wool -- the omnibus version, which includes the first five of a projected series of six separately published novellas. Howey confirmed the deal as having been signed, sealed, and delivered this weekend on one of the Kindle forums. Howey also confirmed script writer Steve Zaillian is also attached to the project.

"Big Dragons Don't Cry"
The book is Big Dragons Don't Cry
Author: C. M. Barrett
A cunning opportunist incites the people of Oasis to kill the local dragon so that he can convert Druid's swamp into suburban housing. The would-be dragonslayer also plans to have the current head of state assassinated and assume power. Unless the dragon joins a kitten with attitude and a human with unlawful psychic gifts, Oasis is finished.
The second book in the series is Dance with Clouds. The third, to be published before the end of the year, is House of the Moon. The fourth, The Book of Sorrows, is in process.
Bio: Because C. M. has to spend so much time thinking like a cat in order to write her series, A Dragon's Guide to Destiny, and to survive in a home run by feline overlords, she sometimes forgets that she's human. The cats encourage this until it's time for a run to the pet store.
She lives in upstate New York in the woods. Besides writing, reading, and serving her overlords, she paints in watercolor, observes wildlife, and daydreams.

How Amazon Saved My Life
How Amazon Saved My Life: How did I end up on my own? It began when I couldn’t get my first YA book, "Relatively Famous", published, despite getting stellar feedback from editors and nearly selling the film rights to a teen pop star. I was at a loss for what to do. I couldn’t keep writing books without selling them. What if the next thing I wrote flopped? I took a risk, in many ways, and wrote "Flat-Out Love". It was the first book that completely came from my heart, and it was a book that ignored all the industry rules. I knew in the back of my head that I could self-publish it, but at the time it seemed like that would have been an admission of defeat.

Help Save Our Home!
I know that there are probably millions of other people out there that are probably going through the same thing, so you probably ask yourself, why should I care about you? Your right, I’m not that special, but let me say this, unless someone cares a whole lot, then no one will ever care, and nothing will ever change, there will still be homeless people and families like myself that will never know what their own American dream is like. So the least you can do is make a difference for this family.
Unfortunately, since I’m really short on money, I do not have much to give you in return for your donations. All I can offer is my artwork that I do since I am an artist. I have my own website with a gallery of all the artwork I have done over the years, I can offer your prints and posters of various sizes of any piece of work you like from my gallery. You can visit my website here at www.ravenfirestudio.net

700,000 books later, she finally has a ‘bestseller’ - The Style Blog - The Washington Post: Dropped by her print publisher after lackluster sales, Belleville, a Stanford economics grad and a former singer/songwriter, started self-publishing her e-books two years ago. When steamy titles like “Take Me” and “Game for Love” caught on, she started writing new books as fast as her fingers could fly (and that’s pretty fast — she writes several books a year). Online retailers such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Nook caught the sales and she hit those retailer’s lists, but she remained under the radar of non-retailers.

“When I first opened it I started to cry,” said Blanco.

In the case of Ragan, who actually sold over 250,000 ebooks in her first year of indie publication, the attention her books received in terms of sales led to a contract for her books to be published by Thomas & Mercer, the mystery imprint of Amazon’s traditional publishing house, Amazon Publishing.
The Amazon Effect | The Nation
The Amazon Effect | The Nation:
From the start, Jeff Bezos wanted to “get big fast.” He was never a “small is beautiful” kind of guy. The Brobdingnagian numbers tell much of the story. In 1994, four years after the first Internet browser was created, Bezos stumbled upon a startling statistic: the Internet had been growing at the rate of 2,300 percent annually. In 1995, the year Bezos, then 31, started Amazon, just 16 million people used the Internet. A year later, the number was 36 million, a figure that would multiply at a furious rate. Today, more than 1.7 billion people, or almost one out of every four humans on the planet, are online. Bezos understood two things. One was the way the Internet made it possible to banish geography, enabling anyone with an Internet connection and a computer to browse a seemingly limitless universe of goods with a precision never previously known and then buy them directly from the comfort of their homes. The second was how the Internet allowed merchants to gather vast amounts of personal information on individual customers.

Though she didn't live to see it happen, Boissevain was instrumental in winning women the right to vote in 1920.

Hugh Howey: How My Self-Published Book 'Wool' Became A Hot Movie Property
Hugh Howey: How My Self-Published Book 'Wool' Became A Hot Movie Property: Many moons ago, long before I dreamed of seeking fame and fortune as a self-published author, back when I was of that peculiar age when young men choose to live in smelly apartments with other young and smelly men, I had as a roommate the incredible and talented drummer of Charlie's on Acid.
Rusty was a lovely chap with the long hair and authentic facial hair you'd expect of a rock and roll artist, and he was quite beloved for being considerably less messy than my brother and I. But what made Rusty a legend in my eyes (aside from the groupies) was his minor role in a feature film. Charlie's on Acid, you see, was the band chosen to play Brandon Lee's backup in The Crow. When they show band posters in the film featuring Brandon as the lead singer, those are my friends Sean, Rusty, Eric, and Toby in the background trying to look suitably boss.

Dr. Philip Zimbardo: Why Society Is Failing Young Boys: Have you noticed how guys are being portrayed in movies lately? Unless you've been living under a rock you've seen at least one of these: Knocked Up, Failure to Launch, Hall Pass, Old School, or the Jackass series.
All the leading male characters are presented as expendable losers usually incapable of taking responsibility for themselves, often plotting intricate but seldom realized plans to get laid, and generally running the opposite direction of any kind of commitment. Not only do they avoid the future, sometimes they attempt to re-live past glory in order to avoid living in the present. It seems these guys don't have much value to contribute to society beyond their ability to entertain the other male characters, and of course, the audience.

"Kiana Davenport faced a problem that many writers are familiar with. Despite being an award winning and bestselling author, her collection of short stories entitled “Cannibal Nights,” which she considered to be her best work, had been rejected for publication. “I had submitted them as a collection to all of the Big Six publishers in New York,” she told me, “but their response was uniform. ‘Story collections don't sell.’ So these prize-winning stories sat in my files for a couple of years. It was utterly depressing. And I know many writers share this experience.”
